We Were Never Poor
03:40
|
|||
We were never poor
We found gold as easy as our feet would find the floor
While neighbors bled and borrowed on the other side of doors
But we were never poor
So we bathed ourselves in wine
We drank poison when our conversations couldn’t pass the time
Our hearts were far from God but we felt fine
Because we bathed ourselves in wine
But if I’m so blind, how did I find that speck in your eye?
I guess I’m fine.
We dug our own graves
We scoured the world for sinners’ souls that heroically we’d save
We tried to give you swimming lessons though we were drowning in the lake
I’d call that digging your own grave
If I’m so blind, how did I find that speck in your eye?
I guess I’m fine.

The Scenic Route
04:30
|

How do I vanquish that which lives so deep within me?
If it brings me such joy how dare I call it sinning?
These questions hector me like a siren song that calls for my demise
And this pray to anything, “Please give me one more try”
Though they seem wrong, know my steps will lead me home
On and on, filth persists to build these bones
And though I took the scenic route
I’ve been coming home to you
Indiana, give me something I can use
I don’t want to say I wasted my best years on you
Your nights are cool and your mornings are the greatest I have ever witnessed
But if the last train out left tonight, I can’t say that I’d miss it
Though they seem wrong, know my steps will lead me home
On and on, filth persists to build these bones
And though I took the scenic route
I’ve been coming home to you

Spring Without the Fall
02:55
|
|||
Can you know the sun if the moon has never beamed?
And can you know the land if you’ve never sailed the sea?
Sometimes, I wonder in my moments of shame
If it’s by the evils I’ve known that I gave good its name
So when you walk in light, don’t forget the night
And when fortune favors every call,
Remember child, there would be no spring without the fall.

Misplaced
04:14
|

I put on my slick shoes. I put on my slick shoes for you.
But the only one slipping, the only one slipping was you.
Your faith, my pace, and I chose to go fast
Then in my haste, I left you in the past
There’s still those days where I’d like to go back
But we both know it don’t go down like that
So darling don’t look to me for love
All of mine is borrowed
And if my lender calls to collect
We’ll both be left in sorrow
So darling don’t look to me for guidance
I’m a follower myself
And if my steps become unmarked
I’ll charge directly into hell
Like thanking the flowers, like thanking the flowers for the blossoms they don
Your praise was misguided, you should’ve been thanking my roots all along
Your faith, my pace, and I chose to go fast
Then in my haste, I left you in the past
There’s still those days where I’d like to go back
But we both know it don’t go down like that
So darling don’t look to me for love
All of mine is borrowed
And if my lender calls to collect
We’ll both be left in sorrow
So darling don’t look to me for guidance
I’m a follower myself
And if my steps become unmarked
I’ll charge directly into hell

Sandcastles

I don’t know your name but when I do things will change
And I don’t know your face yet but I picture it every day
And I don’t know your scent but someday I’ll wear it on my clothes
And I don’t know your favorite color but we’ll use it to paint our home
There’s a girl I haven’t met
She waits for me
And the thought of her keeps me content
She waits for me I’d bet
I don’t know your past, all the places you were before
But someday you’ll tell me and I’ll slyly laugh because I’ll know what our timelines were for
There’s a girl I haven’t met
She waits for me
And the thought of her keeps me content
She waits for me I’d bet

By all rights I should’ve never seen your face
I should’ve never had the chance to speak your sweet name
By all rights I should’ve never known your hands
I should’ve never known your hands to fill mine’s empty space
But then the holes all filled in
And our hands warmed by each others was way more than we should get
My God, this is more than I’ve earned
This is more than I deserve
By all rights I should’ve trudged the world alone
I should’ve had one set of footprints follow me through the snow
Oh
But then the holes all filled in
And our hands warmed by each others was way more than we should get
My God, this is more than I’ve earned
This is more than I deserve
And as my frozen hands receive the gift of yours,
I don't ask for more.

Gold
04:03
|
|||
I saw men stronger than I blowing smoke into the night
And so I said to myself, on the side, “I want that life”
So for once in my life, when the world goes left, could I go right?
I saw men waiting in line and spending their hours on bluster and shine
But when I checked my watch, we had run out of time and rust received its right
Rust always receives its right
So for once in my life, when the world goes left, could I go right?
Our gold here is not gold there.
